  7. Overview
  8. --------
  9. The configuration portion of the program allows you to change the
  10. configuration parameters for the NIC to fit the specific environment
  11. in which the NIC is installed.
  12.  
  13. The diagnostic portion of the Configuration and Diagnostic Program is
  14. designed to make sure that the NIC is installed correctly and
  15. functioning properly in your computer.  The Group 1 tests check the
  16. physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the NIC and
  17. require only that the NIC be installed in the computer.  The Group 2
  18. tests check the NIC's ability to transmit data on the network and
  19. require that the NIC be connected to a loopback plug or to a network.
  20. The Group 3 tests check the NIC's ability to correctly transmit and 
  21. receive data over the network and require that the NIC be connected
  22. to a network on which an echo server has been set up.
  23.  
  24. The computer containing the NIC to be configured or tested must be
  25. running DOS only.
  26.  
  27. NOTE:  If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the
  28.        server to save their work and log out from the network.  The
  29.        Configuration and Diagnostic Program disrupts the normal operation
  30.        of servers and workstations, so work that is not saved may be lost.
  31.  
  32.        Then shut down the server, and reboot with a DOS-only diskette.
  33.        (This way no drivers or TSRs will be running when the program
  34.        is started.)

  37. Starting the Configuration and Diagnostic Program
  38. --------------------------------------------------
  39. There are two ways to start the program:
  40.  
  41. 1.  Automatically, from the INSTALL.EXE program, by selecting Configuration
  42.     and Diagnostic Program on the main menu.
  43.  
  44. 2.  Manually, from the root directory of the EtherDisk 1 diskette, by 
  45.     typing the following command:
  46.  
  47.     3C90XCFG [command keyword] [parameter list]
  48.  
  49.     3C90XCFG represents the 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic Program name.
  50.     The brackets indicate that the command keyword and parameter list are
  51.     optional.
  52.  
  53.     3C90XCFG without any arguments invokes the program in full windows
  54.     mode.  This includes mouse support and context-sensitive help.  
  55.     Press [F1] for help at any time.

  58.     Command Line Keywords
  59.     ---------------------
  60.     You can use the first two characters of any command or parameter as a 
  61.     shortcut.  For example, 3C90XCFG HE RU means 3C90XCFG HELP RUN.

  63.     Also, the command keywords and parameters are not case-sensitive, so
  64.     CONFIGURE, configure, and Configure, for example, will all work.

  67.     CONFIGURE
  68.         Configures a NIC in one of three ways:
  69.  
  70.         1.  Automatically with the /auto parameter
  71.         2.  Using a specified NIC configuration file
  72.         3.  Using command line configuration parameters
  73.  
  74.     ECHOSERVER
  75.         Enables a designated NIC to function within the 
  76.         echo server.
  77.  
  78.     HELP 
  79.         Displays general or command-specific help information.  
  80.         To get command-specific help, type:
  81.  
  82.         3C90XCFG HELP [command keyword]
  83.  
  84.     LANGUAGE 
  85.         Invokes the program in full windows mode using a 
  86.         specified external resource file.  This option provides
  87.         support for multiple languages via a different resource
  88.         file for each language supported.
  89.        
  90.     LIST 
  91.         Displays a list of installed NICs and their recognized 
  92.         NIC numbers.
  93.        
  94.     RUN 
  95.         Executes the diagnostic tests (which can also be specified
  96.         from a file) on a selected NIC and writes the results 
  97.         to the screen, a file, or a printer.

  100. Configuration
  101. -------------
  102. The NIC can be configured in either full-screen windows mode or 
  103. command line mode.
  104.

  106.     Full Screen Windows Mode
  107.     ------------------------
  108.     To configure the NIC using full-screen windowing, type:
  109.     
  110.     3C90XCFG [Enter] 
  111.     
  112.     Then select the Configure NIC option in the Install pull-down menu.

  115.     Command Line Mode
  116.     -----------------
  117.         Command Line Mode Defaults
  118.         --------------------------
  119.         Defaults:  CONFIGURE has /AUTO and /ADAPTERNUM:1 as defaults.  
  120.         So, for example, if only 3C90XCFG CONFIGURE is used, NIC 
  121.         number 1 will be auto configured.
  122.  
  123.         ADAPTERNUM:N and /SLOT:S parameters can be used with any of the 
  124.         CONFIGURE options that follow.  They are both intended for use 
  125.         whenever multiple NICs are present in the computer and 
  126.         recognized by the Configuration and Diagnostic Program.

  128.         /ADAPTERNUM:N specifies the number of the NIC to be configured for 
  129.         PCI computers.  Run the LIST command separately to determine the 
  130.         NIC number to use here.

  132.     There are three different ways to configure the NIC using 
  133.     command-line mode. 
  134.     
  135.     1.  Command line with auto configuration
  136.  
  137.     2.  Command line with explicit parameters
  138.  
  139.     3.  Command line with configuration file
  140.

  142.         Command Line with Auto Configuration
  143.         ------------------------------------
  144.         Command syntax:  3C90XCFG CONFIGURE  /AUTO
  145.  
  146.         The /AUTO parameter configures the NIC media type 
  147.         automatically.  All other options settings are left unchanged.
  148.  
  149.         NOTE:  The program attempts to detect what media type is being 
  150.                used.  Therefore, connect to the network first and then run        
  151.                3C90CFG CONFIGURE /AUTO.  The program will configure the 
  152.                media type for you.

  155.         Command Line with Explicit Parameters
  156.         -------------------------------------
  157.         Command syntax:  3C90XCFG CONFIGURE  [ /BSIZE:N  /XCVR:N  /TR:N
  158.                          /FULLDUPLEX:N /OPTIMIZE:N  /LINKBEAT:N ]

  160.         Command line configuration parameters are used to configure the 
  161.         NIC using only the option settings you specify.  Some 
  162.         parameters are for all NICs; some are for PCI only.  For 
  163.         example, /BSIZE:N is a PCI-only parameter. In most cases, any 
  164.         combination of parameters can be used.  Therefore, it is possible
  165.         to modify only a few settings if needed.

  168.             Boot PROM Size  
  169.             Possible values - 8,16,32,64,disabled
  170.  
  171.         /TR (or /XCVR)
  172.             Transceiver  
  173.             Possible values - 100BASE-TX, TP, 10BASE-T (same as TP),
  174.             COAX, AUI, EXTERNAL (same as AUI)
  175.  
  176.         /OPTIMIZE 
  177.             Network Driver Optimization
  178.             Possible values - NORMAL, NETWORK, CPU
  179.  
  180.         /LINKBEAT
  181.             Link Beat disable/enable (pre-10BASE-T standard only)
  182.             Possible values - disabled, enabled
  183.             
  184.             NOTE:  Try this setting ONLY if pre-10BASE-T standard hubs
  185.                    are in use.

  187.         /FULLDUPLEX
  188.             Full Duplex disable/enable 
  189.             Possible values - disabled, enabled
  190.  
  191.             NOTE:  Enable this setting ONLY when the NIC is
  192.                    connected to a 100BASE-T or 10BASE-T repeater
  193.                    supporting full duplex.  Otherwise, it will bring 
  194.                    down the network.

  197.         Command Line with Configuration File
  198.         ------------------------------------
  199.         Command syntax:  3C90XCFG CONFIGURE  /CONFIGFILE:filename
  200.  
  201.         /CONFIGFILE:filename is used to configure a NIC with the
  202.         settings specified in an ASCII configuration file that can be 
  203.         created and modified by any text editor.  The filename can be
  204.         a fully qualified DOS filename including a path.  A standard
  205.         format for the file must be used, as follows:
  206.        
  207.         -   Variable names and values match the wording in the
  208.             full-screen Configure window in most cases.
  209.  
  210.         -   Begin each variable/value line with an "at" symbol (@), 
  211.             followed by a variable name, a colon (:), and the value.
  212.  
  213.             Example:  @Media type: 100BASE-TX
  214.  
  215.         -   Blank lines and other white spaces are allowed between 
  216.             variable lines.
  217.  
  218.         -   Start any comment lines with a semicolon (;).
  219.  
  220.         -   The variable names allowed are:
  221.             Boot PROM size
  222.             Media type
  223.             Network driver optimization
  224.             Full duplex
  225.             Link beat
  226.  
  227.         -   The values allowed are the same as those shown in the 
  228.             full-screen Configure window.
  229.         
  230.             Example 1:  @Network driver optimization:Normal
  231.             Example 2:  @Media type:On-board Coax

  234. Diagnostic
  235. ----------

  238.     Full-Screen Windows Mode

  240.     To run the diagnostic tests using full-screen windowing, type:
  241.     
  242.     3C90XCFG [ENTER] 
  243.     
  244.     Then select the Run Tests option in the Tests pull-down menu.

  247.     Command Line Option - RUN
  248.     -------------------------

  250.     Command syntax:  3C90XCFG RUN  [/TESTFILE:filename] [/RESULTS:[filename
  251.                      | PRN | PRNHP]] [/ADAPTERNUM:N]
  252.  
  253.     The RUN parameter executes the diagnostic tests on a selected NIC
  254.     and displays the results on the screen.  The defaults are NIC
  255.     number 1 and Group 1 tests.  The parameters below are all optional.
  256.  
  257.     /TESTFILE:filename 
  258.          Specifies a test file that contains a specific test setup
  259.          description.
  260.  
  261.     /RESULTS:[filename or PRN or PRNHP] 
  262.          Specifies an alternative location to store the test results.
  263.          This location can be a DOS path and filename, PRN printer port
  264.          (same as LPT1), or PRNHP, which is an HP LaserJet printer
  265.          connected to LPT1.
  266.  
  267.     /ADAPTERNUM:N 
  268.          Specifies the NIC number to be tested, in the case of
  269.          multiple NICs installed in the computer and recognized by 
  270.          this program.  Run the LIST command separately (see LIST below)
  271.          to determine the NIC number to use.

  274. Other Command Line Options
  275. --------------------------
  276.  
  277. HELP
  278.     Command syntax:  3C90XCFG HELP  [Command Keyword]
  279.  
  280.     HELP is an on-line summary of commands.  Without a command keyword,
  281.     it gives a summary of the command keywords.  With a command keyword
  282.     specified, it gives the parameter choices for that particular command.
  283.     For example, 3C90XCFG HELP CONFIGURE gives details about the 
  284.     parameter options for the CONFIGURE command.
  285.  
  286. LANGUAGE
  287.     Command syntax:  3C90XCFG LANGUAGE  /LANGFILE:filename
  288.  
  289.     LANGUAGE invokes the program in full windows mode using a specified
  290.     external resource file.  This option provides support for multiple
  291.     languages through a different resource file for each language supported.
  292.  
  293.     /LANGFILE:filename is a required parameter with this command.
  294.     The filename is the name of the resource file that is loaded by the
  295.     program.  The filename can be a fully qualified DOS filename.
  296.  
  297.     NOTE: At this time, there are no alternative resource files included 
  298.           on the EtherDisk diskette.

  300. LIST
  301.     Command syntax:  3C90XCFG LIST
  302.  
  303.     LIST displays a list of currently installed NICs (and their 
  304.     assigned NIC numbers) that are recognized by this program. The 
  305.     NIC number is then used as the N value for the /ADAPTERNUM:N 
  306.     parameter when multiple NICs are installed.  There are no 
  307.     parameters associated with the LIST command keyword.

  309. ECHOSERVER
  310.     Command syntax:  3C90XCFG ECHOSERVER  [/ADAPTERNUM:N]
  311.  
  312.     ECHOSERVER enables a NIC to function within an echo server.
  313.     /ADAPTERNUM:N specifies the NIC to be configured in the 
  314.     echo server, in the case of multiple NICs.

  319. If the NIC fails any of the diagnostic tests, see the TROUBLE.TXT file
  320. in the \DIAG directory on the EtherDisk diskette for troubleshooting
  321. procedures.
